Basically, Feng Shui is the art of placement, and as such provides an understanding of what makes a space appealing or repelling to us. Feng Shui is about feeling alright when being in a place, and yes, certainly scent of the room has also something to do with it. Our nasal passage is namely directly connected to our brains- consequently certain scents tickle our brains and brains react to different scents in a different ways- this is the way Feng Shui incorporates aromatherapy into its practice. In short, ‘proper aromatherapy’ brings right and positive energy into space.
Ok, first, let’s get to the basics: there are 5 elements on which Feng Shui is based. They are wood, fire, earth, metal and water, and each of these elements represents certain aspect of life. Most popular use of aromatherapy in Feng Shui is placing natural essential oils in aromatherapy diffusers- because heat releases the scent in the air; some oils on the other hand are formulated to be worn on skin, jewelry; others use incense sticks, etc.
Here is example of element aroma list:
Wood is defined as green aroma; woody aromas have chamomile, eucalyptus, sweet majoram.
Fire is defined as spicy aroma; cinnamon, coriander, black pepper, sage … they are all spicy scents.
Earthy aromas, such as sage, pine, cedar, sandalwood, are typical for earth element.
Metal is defined as citrus aroma: all citrus fruits have it; orange, lemon, tangerine, grapefruit and bergamot.
Water element encompasses floral scents; typically lavender, rose, geranium, ylang ylang, violet.
And now, which aroma to use and when? I can’t tell you for sure what would be best for someone, the trick is that certain aromas are used to bring a missing element into your home or office and this way change the feel in the room. Everyone should play with the scents and identify reaction to different smells.
Feng Shui divides scents technically into element groups- there is more to that. Each scent deals with a specific problem, and effect depends upon the healing features specific scent possesses.
For example, jasmine and lavender are recommended for insomniacs. Lavender is generallz very smoothing. Rose and jasmine evoke love life. Lemon scent brings out clarity- it is a very clean smell and it helps when studying. Flower aromas are great for stimulating energy, etc. In short, every scents does something to us- it either relaxes, helps in meditation, rejuvenates and freshens, brings happiness, or helps with insomnia.
Now, it is up to you to experiment and investigate what feels right for you. I hope you will enjoy it! |
