It is important to make sure any soft cheese you eat has a label clearly stating that it's made from pasteurized milk. Only pasteurized milk cannot carry disease-causing organisms, including a potentially deadly bacterium called listeria monocytogenes.
Most diary products are actually made of pasteurized milk, but it is better to search for guarantee, than to be sorry later. Although listeria infections are relatively rare, pregnant women are about 20 times more likely than other healthy adults to get it. And the infection can be lethal for their babies! This is the main reason why eating cheese during pregnencie is not recommended, and esp. soft cheese as it is particularly good hosts for listeria. However, if soft cheese has pasteurization label, than it is allowed. |
