I have a question about my prom dress. I want to look younger now, so I do not want to go with black color. I have blond hair- what dress color would suit me best?

I am glad you want to avoid black color- black is very elegant, but also other colors can be. Besides there will be plenty of time to wear black dresses later in life…
Since you are blond, and I suppose you have rather fair skin, I would suggest color of peach and similar beige tones, also white. This colors will definitely make you look younger now, when it is time to look young!

I feel that your color style is very personal and influenced by many factors.

First, there are the colors that look good on you, which we will discuss in this lesson.

Then, there are the colors that make you feel good. Often these will overlap with the colors that look good on you, but sometimes they will not.

The way you prefer to combine color elements in your clothing is unique to you.

Color consultants have made a very good living by creating color charts and schemes based on hair and eye colors. They assess you and tell you which colors are best for you. This is an excellent solution for some women.

That method has never worked for me. I guess it is the same reason that most style books never really worked for me. Someone else telling me what to wear just never really hit at the heart of who I am, and I doubt it ever will.

Unfortunately, there are many consultants who do not have the talent (although they may have skill) to really find out what colors will be best for you. They will take your money and leave you with color choices that are “off,” or just not quite right, no matter how hard they try.

I was truly lost (color-wise) when I was younger. I relied on black to round out every outfit I owned, because it seemed easy. Once I began to assess the colors that are in my skin tone, I was able to discover my most flattering colors and the colors that coordinate best with them.
Sound simple?

Even if it doesn’t sound easy, it is. The colors that will look best on you are everywhere; you just have to look for them. The colors in your skin are where we will start. There are two major skin colorations we are looking for.

The first is the actual colors in your skin. These colors show up in several areas:

Your Palm
Your Wrist
Your Ear
Your Gums
Under Your Eyes

The colors will be a shade of red/pink/rose, orange/peach/coral, or lavender/plum/mauve.

You will find these colors in the pads of your hands, the shadows of your skin, your veins, and the interior of your mouth.

The second set of skin colors we are looking for are the neutrals. These are the shades we normally associate with skin, hair, and eyes. Black, brown, blue-black, blonde, ash, russet, red, and gray may be found in your hair, but also in your skin tones and eyes.

White, beige, ivory, taupe, olive, greenish-yellow (such as golden tones), and blush are most likely found in your skin.

Colors such as turquoise, green, gold, aqua, violet, red and others may be found in your eyes, along with the predominant color. You will have to look closely, but you will find more colors than you ever dreamed in your skin. These are colors that will look good on you, and the colors that complement them will as well.

To record these colors, I use paint chips (you can get a paint color selector for about $30 at most home improvement stores) or a graphic artist’s tool called the Pantone selector. There are many options out there.

Match the colors in your body with different colors swatches and record them, then match colors to those using a good color theory book (art stores carry them) to find which colors will look always look best on you.
