Hi She!
Acne dysmorphia is actually not a problem connected that much to acne as might seem on the first glance, it is more problem with skin complexion! Bigger problem is underlying- acne dysmorphia is a mental problem.
It is possible that people with acne dysmorphia actually has acne, but not as much as this person sees it. It is similar to anorexia- with anorexia is fixation on weight, with acne dysmorphia is fixation on skin- skin complexion. Person with acne dysmorphia will look her/him self in the mirror hundred of times, they are obsessed with their skin condition- they will pick certain area on skin until it bleeds and actually becomes problematical.
Usually these people have very small breakouts on skin, so actually there are few treatments available for those types of breakouts. Bigger problem lies in this person’s minds- they perceive their acne a bigger problem than they actually are. So when dealing with acne dysmorphia, first thing we should treat is state of mind, after than acne become a minor problem for patient (as thay actually are). Experts suggest behavioral therapy, others hypnosis. In extreme cases serotonin reuptake inhibitor helps reduce symptoms.
Acne dysmorphia is a mental disorder, which is important fact. It could have horrible consequences if not treated (suicidal), so it has to be treated with professional help. Acne dysmorphia has to be treated separately from acne.
If you have this problem or you think some of your friends has it, I would sincerely suggest you seek professional help.
