15 PREGNANT DILEMMAS

What should you drink, what should you eat, what physical activities should you encounter…
In short, let’s see what is during pregnancy allowed, what recommendable and what forbidden!

1. Can sexual intercourse endanger fetus?
If you are having normal, and not risk pregnancy, sexual intercourses do not cause any problems, and penetration does not represent danger for fetus. Though, it is recommendable that intercourse is gentle and careful. In first trimester miscarriage risk is namely higher, and it can be stimulated during intercourse.
You can have normal sexual life until the seventh or eight month; you should only pay attention to the position during intercourse, particularly when stomach starts to grow. It is recommendable that woman is on top.
In second trimester intimate moments are usually more often, but in woman wish or need for sexual intercourse due to hormonal change starts to weaken. Reasons are changes that happen on woman’s body, and fear of loosing baby.

2. Is it allowed to drink coffee or wine?
During pregnancy you should lower consumption of teas, chocolates, and cola- drinks, but you should also cut on coffee: one or two cups are enough.
If you can, you should totally abandon coffee and alcohol. These drinks namely contain ingredients that stimulate and irritate nervous system. In big doses they can increase the risk of miscarriage or premature delivery.
You should also take it easy on wine: alcohol releases body dangerous ingredients that can endanger organs forming in fetus in first 3 months. Pregnant women are not recommended to drink more than one glass of wine daily.

3. Are medications dangerous for baby?
Active ingredients in medications could come in interaction with fetus, which could influence baby development. Medications should be taken only when this is inevitable, and only when prescribed by or under supervision of doctor. It is very important not to take any kind of medications without counseling doctor that monitors pregnancy. This is also true for ‘natural medications’ like herbs or homeopathic medications, because they also contain active ingredients that could interact with fetus development.

4. Does solarium cause spots on skin?
During pregnancy it is not recommendable to visit solariums. Due to hormonal changes skin becomes more sensitive, and exposure to UV rays could cause spots on skin. Warmth from UV lights relaxes, but also widens blood vessels, which can slow down blood circulation from legs to heart and thus cause swellings.

5. Should I use depilation wax during pregnancy?
During pregnancy the need for depilation treatments is usually lower: reason for that is higher production of womanly hormones- estrogen and progesterone slower the growth of hair, which is otherwise stimulated by male hormone testosterone.
Anyway, it is better to stay focused on gentle methods of hair removal, like shaving and depilation (you must make an allergy test first). Hot wax could badly effect blood circulation which is slowed down anyway. Cold wax is allowed if woman has no problems with circulation or swellings, or if she hasn’t broken capillaries.

6. Can I smoke during pregnancy?
It is scientifically proven that smoking during pregnancy r presents high risk for baby: smoking increases risk for miscarriage and can cause irregular development of baby.
Children whose mothers are smoking during pregnancy have lower birth weight and are prone to respiratory system diseases.
Doctors advise total abstinence from cigarettes during pregnancy and nursing, and if you cannot quit smoking even for the sake of your own child, at least bring it down to minimum to lower potential damage for unborn.

7. Should pregnant women color their hair?
In first three months it is best to avoid permanent colors with hydrogen, but also colors based on herbs. Chemicals contained in products could in certain amounts enter circulation and endanger baby.
Forelocks are allowed, because only certain hair parts are colored and color does not reach hair root, so there is no risk skin will absorb color.
Color shampoos for refreshing hair color and color sprays are allowed, but before applying any of these products you should make an allergy test on your skin. In pregnancy skin is more sensitive, so even color or products that are normally used without any problem, can during pregnancy cause skin irritation.

8. Should I avoid traveling by airplane?
Most airplane companies will without any problems admit pregnant woman, but after seventh month you will probably need doctor’s opinion there is no risk for having premature delivery. Exercise, particularly during long flights. This will help prevent swelling of legs and it will relieve pressure of womb on dam, which additionally slows down blood circulation. While traveling it is recommendable to stand up more often, walk, and stretch legs.

9. Is swimming beneficial for pregnant women?
Swimming is very recommendable during pregnancy, because swimming tightens muscles and does not burthen any joints. Stretching body is also highly recommendable.
But avoid activities like aerobics, running, tennis, and skiing, because these activities stimulate muscles, including womb muscles, thus they need to be avoided in order not to damage placenta and fetus.

10. Are interventions on teeth allowed?
Teeth interventions are allowed only if necessary. You should know that during pregnancy gums are very sensitive and prone to swelling and bleeding.
If necessary, local anesthesia without adrenaline is allowed. This is because adrenaline causes contraction of little blood vessels, which can damage placenta.

11. Should pregnant women wear high heels?
Doctors advise pregnant women to avoid wearing shoes with high heels, but also totally flat shoes. Later namely causes irregular posture and interacts with blood circulation. Best heels are one or two inches high.

12. Should PAPA test be done during pregnancy?
Usually PAPA test is done in the beginning of pregnancy, but this is not necessary if test was done less than one year ago.
Generally, during pregnancy all check ups and analysis are allowed, except x-ray therapy, which can damage fetus.

13. Do babies like listening music in stomach?
After 6 months baby imbibes all sounds, and can be bothered by loud music or sounds. Loud music stimulates production of adrenaline (hormone of stress), which is during pregnancy or otherwise not beneficial for woman’s body. It is best to listen classical or any other music that you enjoy in, as long as it is not too loud.

14. Is it allowed to use laxatives?
Pregnant women often suffer from constipation, which is most often in last months of pregnancy. Reason for that is enlarged uterus, which presses on rectal part of intestine. Increased progesterone also influences constipation negatively, because it relaxes muscles, which consequently slows down intestine functioning.
Before you reach for laxatives,  which are actually not recommendable and can even be contradictive, your should firstly try food rich in fibers. Physical activity is also very important: 15- 20 minutes of walking every morning should help.

15. Is driving motor safe?
No, it is not safe, because by riding a motor you are exposed to falling of motor. In the first three months falls are particularly dangerous, because they cause micro-traumas and bring problems in fetus reinforcing.
