No matter what is the trend, every woman should dress according to the shape of her body. We’ve put together a list off different body types and a list of dressing recommendations and visual tricks for each body type.
Some classifications halve woman body in bottom-heavy and top-heavy type. We will subdivide body types and present broader classification, which will allow us to concentrate on ‘traditionally’ problematic areas.
Hour-glass shape
Shape that has been admired throughout the ages: small bone structure, large bust, defined waist and curved hips. If you are lucky one (you really have a dream figure!), show off those curves!! If you think your bust is getting too much attention, wear darker colors and never choose round necklines.
You must avoid all oversized styles. Trying to hide your shape can make you look bulky, so choose tops and jackets with a sleek, simple line. Try to match the colour of your top to your pants or skirt to balance your beautiful figure. Emphasis your delicate bone structure by wearing the semi-fitted clothes. Your attribute is waist, so draw attention with belts or wrap tops that tie at the waist. You can practically wear anything, but flouncy skirt teamed with a top that widens the shoulders will help balance your shape. When buying pants, search for a pair with a wide leg to balance out your hips. Illusion of longer legs can also be achieved with pants with crease along the front.
Straight shape
If you are straight shape, you put on weight in their stomach and backside, while maintaining slender arms and legs. Straight shape describes woman with average bust and large rib cage. There is no large difference between the size of hips, waist, and shoulder. Waist is undefined, bottom is flat, and legs are often the greatest asset!
Since waist is undefined, make sure you don’t make it ticker: avoid all belts or any gathered or heavily pleated fabric at the waist. Wear dresses that are looser in the mid section.
You may elongate your torso with V-neck or any other that falls above collarbone. Another option for elongating upper part is wearing dropped waist pants or skirts or combination of longer jacket with short skirt.
Apple shape
Women with apple body unlike diamonds and pears are generally bigger on the top half of their bodies than on the bottom half. They commonly have slim hips and a large chest and stomach. Apples tend to gain weight above the waist or along the backside. Slim hips allow them to wear styles that accentuate hips. Women with apple body shape often have thin legs- if you have good legs- show them!
Avoid everything that is too tight or too baggy: all tops that are tight, details, pockets, puffy sleeves, because they will emphasis round middle. Instead, keep it as simple as possible. V-neck elongates upper part and makes it more slender; longer tunics help hide rounder middle and draw attention to narrower hips and legs.
Wear body tailored pants and skirts- avoid gathered skirts, because they will make you look bigger. You should emphasis your lower athletic body with fit tailored clothing.
Since women with round body shape have most problematic area in the middle (waist), they should avoid wearing handbags at waist height- wear purse either on hips or lower.
Triangle shape
Women with triangle shape body have broad shoulders, average waist and narrow hips. Their silhouette is forming a triangle- broadest at shoulders and narrow at hips.
You must narrow you wide shoulders: this can be done with raglan or dolman sleeves or by balancing upper part with lower. For example, low slung belt will draw attention to the hips. You can wear pretty much anything on the bottom to balance your upper part.
Triangle body is also great for low rise pants and skirts.
Pear shape
Pear- shaped women tend to have larger lower bodies and smaller upper bodies. If you are a pear, you will find that your hips are slightly wider than your shoulders and that you tend to gain weight below your waist. Pears usually have small chests and flat stomachs.
However, accentuate the positives: a shapely waist, delicate upper body and attractive shoulders and arms.
Yes, waistline is your greatest attribute! For that reason, women with pear shape body look great in all styles that highlight waistline. Whatever you wear, you should never hide it! Wear softly gathered waistlines to keep the lines smooth and most of comfortable. Fabric should be comfortable and flowing. Pants should be drape loose around hips. Pant waists should fall somewhere below the natural waistline for a better fit.
‘Pears’ should wear skirts that create A-line. Best option for skirt hemline is 2 or 3 inches above knee. Midthigh is critical area- it draws attention to the thickest part of your leg.
Tops should be either short or long: nevertheless, the area of hips must be avoided.
Avoid wearing purses in the hip area- wear them above in order to draw attention from problematic spot. Also, make sure jackets are loose enough that they don't pull across the hips/bottom area.
To create visually broader shoulder area, women with pear shaped body often use shoulder pads. The same trick can be applied wearing cowl or square shaped necklines.
To create balance between lower and upper body, to emphasis upper part and ‘hide’ lower. One solution hides in colors: wearing tops with sparkly detailing and darker pants.
Good example of petite pear shaped body is Goldie Hawn or J Lo, although J Lo has broader hips and thighs and could be classified as diamond type. Both pear shape and diamond type women have to follow basically the same rule: emphasis upper part and hide lower, and never ‘divide’ body where is widest either with colors or accessories. Both ‘diamonds’ and ‘pears’ should stay away from bottom heavy pants, because they visually emphasis lower part of the body and additionally shorten legs, and they should wear tops with extra details and ones that accentuate shoulders and face.
