Part 1: Essential Oils Usage

Most essential oils are safe and cause no side effects if used properly. However, you should pay attention to the following factors:
- Keep essential oils out of reach of children- amounts as small as a teaspoon can resulted in death
- Use extreme caution when using oils with children and give children only the gentlest oils at extremely low doses. The safest is to consult a qualified aromatherapy practitioner before using oils with children. Never use peppermint essential oil with young children!
- Never use essential oils near eyes (if diluted essential oil enters eye, flush with clean water; if undiluted essential oil enters eye flush with vegetable oil cold full fat milk; if this doesn’t help seek medical assistance)
- Do not apply undiluted essential oils directly on skin (except lavender and tea tree in moderate amounts)
- Use cream or vegetable oil to dilute neat oils spills on skin; apply soap, wash with warm water; repeat if necessary
- Excess of essential oils can cause headache and nausea. Drink plenty water and get fresh air.
- If you are pregnant, epileptic, have liver damage, have cancer, or have any other medical problem, use essential oils only under the proper guidance of a qualified aromatherapy practitioner.
- Dosage and proper application method are key factora in essential oil safety (essential oils can be safe when used in one way but not if used another way- for example: cinnamon is safe to inhale but not safe to apply on skin)


Pine Essential Oil

Pine essential oil is classified as neither stimulating nor sedating and characterized as middle note. Pine essential oil regulates problems with upper respiratory system, rheumatic and neuralgic problems. Pine essential oil is often used on acupressure points and in vapors.

A tea made by steeping young, green pine needles in boiling water (known as "strunt" in Sweden) is high in vitamins A and C. It has been estimated that a cupful of strong pine needle tea has more vitamin C than average lemon! People from Balkan put young green pine needles in a jar, and cover them with alcohol and sugar. Afterwards they put jar on sun and this way produce great throat syrup. 
Some Pines have very positive effects on burns, itching, rheumatism, throat problems, swellings, wounds, and are very good diuretics and laxatives. Researchers even claim pines reduce level of negative cholesterol.

Juniper Essential Oil

Juniper is an excellent disease preventative: in ancient Europe the juniper scent was believed to ward off the plague. Because of its antibacterial properties, juniper is considered excellent for all kinds of infections.  It is also high in natural insulin, thus works great for diabetics. Juniper has the ability to restore pancreas. Juniper is high in vitamin C. It contains sulfur, copper, and a high content of cobalt, traces of tin and aluminum.

Pregnant women should not use Juniper Essential Oil!
Juniper Essential Oil is used against cellulite, because juniper promotes circulation and fat dissolving. Since juniper has antibacterial properties, it is very helpful in treating acne and because of its astringency it is very effective when dealing with oily skin conditions. Juniper treats dandruff and promotes hair growth. If juniper essential oil is added to bath, it soaks your anxiety away!

Basil Essential Oil

In medical praxis basil is used to treat colds, anti-diarrhea, and kidney disease. Basil is rich in estragole, which is a potent carcinogen and teratogen in rats and mice, but effects on humans have not been studied yet.
Basil fragrance is typical for top aroma note. As such has stimulating effect on human body, for that reason it is used against exhaustion.
Basil essential oil is used when treating problems of respiratory system, such as bronchitis, colds, sinusitis, flu and coughs. It is also known basil essential oil has positive effect on flatulence, gout, insect bites, muscle aches and rheumatism.
It is very important to notice that basil essential oil should be used in moderate amounts, because its high doses might act carcinogenic due to its methyl chavicol content. Some people are sensitive to methyl chavicol in basil oil, and may experience redness or burning if the oil isn't properly diluted before applying to the skin.

Cedar Essential Oil

Cedar essential oil is yellow and orange to deep amber in color. Its scent is warm and sweet, and blends well with other essential oils like juniper, bergamot, rosemary, ylang ylang. Cedar essential oil is generally used as an insect repellent and for bronchial and urinary tract infections.
In skin and hair care, cedar essential oil treats dermatitis, acne, eczema and dandruff, and may also help with fungal infections, and with greasy hair or hair loss. When cedar oil is applied on skin, it is best used as a compress, while when used for hair care, it is best to add few drops of essential oil to shampoo. 
When having problems with respiratory system, particularly with bronchitis, congestion or cough, or when having problems with genitro-urinary system, use cedar essential oil as a compress.
Cedar essential oil also relaxes and eases anxiety from stress-related conditions.  

Cinnamon Essential Oil

Cinnamon essential oil is golden yellow to brown in color. Its perfumery note is middle, which means it works neither stimulating nor sedating, but initial aroma is strong, peppery, earthy, spicy and woody. 
Cinnamon essential oil is often used when having problems with constipation, exhaustion, flatulence, lice, low blood pressure, rheumatism, scabies, and stress.
Cinnamon essential oil is antiseptic and circulatory stimulant.
You should avoid cinnamon essential oil if having problems with alcoholism, haemophilia, prostatic cancer, kidney and liver and if taking anticoagulants. Cinnamon essential oil is very strong mucos membrane irritant and strong skin sensitizer.

Tea Tree Essential Oil

Tea tree essential oil is clear with a yellow tinge. Tea tree essential oil has middle perfumery note, which means it works neither stimulating nor sedating. Initial aroma is medium with medicinal, fresh, woody, earthy and herbaceous scent.
Tea tree essential oil has anti-fungal features and it also works beneficially for respiratory system. Tea tree oil is often used for acne, athlete's foot, candida, chicken pox, corns, cuts, flu, cold sores, insect bites, itching, migraine, oily skin, ringworm, sinusitis, sores, spots, urethritis, warts, whooping cough, colds, muscle aches, sun burns, arthritis, blisters, dandruff …

Cypress Essential Oil

Cypress essential oil has middle perfumery note, which means it works neither stimulating nor sedating. It has fresh evergreen and woody scent.
Cypress essential oil is antiseptic, antirheumatic, anti infectious, anti mycobacterial; it is decongestant, antispasmodic, diuretic, deodorant, and also works anti-bacterial.
Cypress essential oil works well for cellulite, varicose veins and water retention. Cypress essential oil is recommended to women with menstrual difficulties. Cypress essential oil aids nervous tension and all stress related conditions.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

The medicinal properties of the oil were most likely first discovered by the Aborigines, the Australian natives. Eucalyptus essential oil’s note is top, which means it has stimulating effect. Its aroma is strong, fresh, woody and earthy. 
Eucalyptus essential oil has the germicidal effects to ease pains in muscles, joints, helps coughs and kills bacteria in sickrooms. It is fine decongestant, has strong germicidal and disinfectant properties, it also functions as a diuretic, lowers blood sugar and helps to relieve coughs and fevers. Besides its positive effects on respiratory system, eucalyptus essential oil helps combating exhaustion and dispels mental sluggishness. Eucalyptus essential oil has cooling and as said above stimulating effect on mind and body. It is best to apply few drops on pulse points. It is very often used in sauna rooms to improve functioning of respiratory system. Eucalyptus essential oil is recommended when having problems with, bronchitis, catarhh, cold sores, colds, coughing, fever, flu, poor circulation, sinusitis, and arthritis.
Never use eucalyptus essential oil orally, because when taken orally is very toxic. 

Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium essential oil has strong initial aroma, which reminds of floral, fresh, sweet and fruity scent. It is natural perfume! Geranium essential oil is classified as middle perfume tone, which means it is neither stimulating nor sedating.
Geranium essential oil is one of the best skin care oils, because it offers relief from congested, oily and dry skin! It is recommended when having problems with acne, cellulite, dull skin, and oily skin.
It is also recommended during menopause: on emotional level geranium essential oil promotes stability and balance.
Hypersensitive people and people suffering form dermatitis should avoid geranium essential oil.

Sage Essential Oil

Sage is known as wisdom herb. It increases intuition and self awareness. Sage essential oils clears unwanted energy out of person or environment.
In skin care sage essential oil is used when having problems with inflammations, oily skin, dermatitis, skin ulcers, insect bites, cuts, … It is also very effective in hair regeneration, and reduction of alopecia.
Sage essential oil is also effective when dealing with respiratory system problems, when dealing with muscle pain, cardio-vascular problems, immune and digestive difficulties.
It is recommended for easing depression, mental strain and exhaustion.

Chamomile Essential Oil

Chamomile essential oil’s aroma is medium. Its scent is crisp, sweet, fruity and herbaceous.
Chamomile essential oil is used against allergies, arthritis, boils, cuts, cystitis, headache and insect bites. In combination with carrier oil chamomile essential oil is the first choice when treating inflamed and irritated skin, and also when treating dry, itchy and flaky skin. In case of sun burns it is best to mix chamomile with lavender essential oil and apply on affected skin.

Clove Essential Oil

Clove is commonly used in cooking. It is used in cigarettes and can also be added to mouthwash.
Clove promotes sweating with fevers, colds, and flue, and is often used in remedies for whooping cough. It is safe and effective for relieving vomiting during pregnancy- unlike some other herbs clove does not harm baby. Cloves are said to have religious qualities too: worn in an amulet they drive away negativity, hostility, stop gossip, stimulate the memory, and are a component in love spells.

Generally, clove essential oil is used as anaesthetic and as insect repellent. Some people claim that clove essential oil is an aphrodisiac, and that stimulates body lust.
Clove essential oil stops toothache when it is applied directly to the cavity; traditionally dentists used this essential oil for it’s healing and soothing properties, in order to ease pain in their patients.
Clove essential oil has beneficial effect for people with cold extremities. Clove essential oil is great aid to immune system; as said already it helps to ward off colds, flu and whooping cough.

Fennel Essential Oil

Fennel essential oil’s perfumery note is middle to top, which means this essential oil works stimulating. Its aroma is sweet and spicy.
Fennel essential oil is used in skin care as it is astringent for dry, oily and mature skin. It helps dealing with cellulite.
Fennel essential oil treats asthma, asthmatic bronchitis, whooping cough, pulmonary congestion, and other difficulties in breathing. It helps with rheumatism and acts as slight muscle analgesic. Fennel essential oil is used for bruises, flatulence, gums and mouth problems, and also when dealing with nausea and obesity. On emotional level fennel essential oil is considered to increase inner strength and courage.
Generally, fennel essential oil is though to detoxify body and strengthens liver. Supposedly it balances hormones and has anti-aging effects in skin care.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil’s perfumery note is top to middle. Its aroma is sweet, but fresh and floral, also slightly fruity. Lavender is s a scent with a long tradition in perfumes and aromatherapy. Lavender essential oil has stimulating effect. 
Diluted lavender oil is often used in massages, where producing relaxing and calming effect. With the same effect, lavender is used in baths. It is known that in hot baths lavender relaxes and produces pleasant drowsiness, while in a cold bath oil refreshes and energizes.
Lavender oil is highly recommended for troubled skin with acne problems, since it temporary relieves symptoms.
Besides mentioned lavender essential oil is also used when treating allergies, anxiety, asthma, athlete's foot, bruises, burns, chicken pox, colic, cuts, cystitis, depression, dermatitis, dysmenorrhea, earache, flatulence, headache, hypertension, insect bites, insect repellant, itching, labor pains, migrane, rheumatism, scabies, scars, sores, sprains, strains, stress, stretch marks, vertigo, and whooping cough.

Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon essential oil’s perfume note is top. Aroma is namely very fresh, and similar to fresh lemon, except it is more concentrated and richer. Lemon essential oil has stimulating effect.
Lemon essential oil is used when treating athlete's foot, chiliblains, colds, corns, dull skin, flu, oily skin, spots, varicose veins, and warts.
It is important to notice that lemon essential oil may cause skin irritation. It should not be applied, if skin is exposed to sunlight within 24 hours due to its photo-toxicity.

Lemongrass Essential Oil

Lemongrass essential oil has sweet and lemony nuance. Lemongrass essential oil creates clean and refreshing feeling. Lemongrass has been prized for its aromatic properties since the 1800s when cultivation and distillation began in India.
Lemongrass essential oil is used in skin care: in facial oils, masks and facial saunas. It is particularly recommended for oily skin types with acne. This essential oil is also recommendable in hair care by adding few drops to unscented shampoos and conditioners. 
Lemongrass essential oil is also used for inhalation, excessive perspiration, against athlete's foot, flatulence, insect repellent, muscle aches, scabies stressful situations and as massage oil.

Tangerine Essential Oil

Tangerine essential oil has top perfumery note. Its initial aroma is refreshing, sweet and citrus, and reminds of aroma of tangerine peels. Tangerine essential oil has stimulating effects. 
All citrus oils eliminate emotional confusion and increase ones sense of humor and well-being.
In moderate amounts tangerine essential oil is an effective skin care ingredient. However, because of its photo-toxicity tangerine essential oil should not be applied on skin if being exposed to sunlight.
Tangerine essential oil is also useful in the kitchen (moderate amounts added to sauces, dressings, pastries and desserts) and in housekeeping (few drops of tangerine oil helps when washing dishes and cleaning the house).
 .
Lemon Balm Essential Oil

As a medicinal plant, lemon balm has traditionally been used against catarrh, fever, flatulence, headaches, influenza, toothaches, and as insect repellent. Lemon balm has carminative, diaphoretic, and as sedative features. Today topical lemon balm is most popular as a treatment for genital or oral herpes, since it appears to make flare-ups less intense and they last for a shorter period of time.
Recent evidences prove that lemon balm has sedative action on the central nervous systems of laboratory mice; the study was performed on people, and it showed similar results, particularly in people with Alzheimer's disease.
Important notice! Lemon balm, inhaled or took orally, reduces alertness and impairs mental function. For this reason, individuals engaging in activities that require alertness, such as operating a motor vehicle, should avoid using lemon balm in all forms beforehand. 

Mint Essential Oil

Mint essential oil has a cool, tingling, and refreshing blend of honey with spearmint and peppermint oils. Aroma is fresh and citrus, which creates perfect aromatherapy, particularly in hot time.
Mint was originally used as a medical herb to treat stomach ache and chest pains. During the middle age mint leaves were used to whiten teeth.
Today mint is an ingredient in cosmetics and perfumes. Mint essential oil is used in medicine as component of many drugs, and is very popular in aromatherapy as it freshen body and mind.
Mint essential oil is mildly irritating to the skin.

Orange Essential Oil

The isolation of sweet orange oil and orange juice poses a challenge for producers: unless two are extracted cleanly and separately from each other, the quality of both is diminished. This is very interesting information, because most other essential oils are obtained by steam distillation of fresh plant material, while citrus oils (like for example orange essential oil) are adversely affected by that process. The acid in the fruit juice namely breaks down and diminishes the citrus content of fresh oil when heat is applied. This results in aroma which isn’t resemblance of the freshly peeled fruit.  
Perfumery note of orange essential oil is top. Its aroma is citrus, sweet and reminds of orange peels. Orange essential oil indicates stimulating effect.
Orange essential oil has been used to fight colds, constipation, dull skin, flu, flatulence, gum and mouth problems, slowly digestion and against stress.
Orange essential oil usually does not cause any problems, though some people have experienced dermatitis from the limonene content of sweet orange. It’s effects on skin are photo-toxic if exposed to sun. 

Neroli Essential Oil

Neroli got its name for an Italian princess who wore the flower as a perfume. Neroli with its medium perfume note is neither stimulating nor sedative, and is still an important content of all perfume kinds. Its aroma is sweet with floral citrus blend. Many describe it as an exotic scent. 
In skin care neroli essential oil prevents and treats acne, treads veins, stretch marks and scars. Any skin type can benefit from neroli essential oil as it works regenerating, improves circulation and improves skin elasticity. It has been proven that neroli essential oil treats skin conditions that are linked to emotional stress. Any type of skin can benefit from neroli, though it is particularly recommended for dry and sensitive skin.
Neroli essential oil helps with respiratory problems, is beneficial to increase muscular tone, regulates blood pressure, poor circulation. Neroli is immuno-stimulant and works as an aphrodisiac. It has fresh aroma, slightly citrus and floral, but lighter that one of neroli. Its fresh, woody aroma is stabilizing and reassuring, and inspires strength and commitment. Petitgrain essential oil is used to treat acne, fatigue, oily skin and stress.

Patchouli Essential Oil

Patchouli essential oil is a relaxant with an earthy, sensual fragrance. Its aroma is rich, earthy, and woody with hidden fruity note. Patchouli is balancing oil and is helpful in skincare, particularly for the mature and chapped skin. Patchouli essential oil is also used to treat athlete's foot, eczema, menstrual crams, fatigue, frigidity, hair care, stress, and is an effective insect repellent.

Black Pepper Essential Oil

Black pepper essential oil reminds of crisp, fresh, peppercorn aroma, with dry, woody and spicy notes.
In skin care black pepper essential oil helps treating chilblains, bruises, cuts, wounds, dermatosis, and possible skin irritation. It also helps dealing with respiratory problems. Besides black pepper essential oil treats arthritis, muscular aches and pains, neuralgia, poor muscle tone, temporary paralysis, and stiffness. It helps with anemia, toothache, tonsilitis, increases saliva, aids reducing diets, colic, constipation, restores colon tone, flatulence, nausea, diarrhea, it increases circulation.
Black pepper essential oil is mental stimulant: on mental level black pepper reduces fear and motivates change and can also serve as a protection from negative energy.

Rose Essential Oil

Perfumery note of rose essential oil is middle with strong, floral and sweet aroma. Rose essential oil’s effects are neither stimulating nor sedating. It treats depression, eczema, figidity, mature skin, menopause and stress.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary essential oil reminds of fresh, herbaceous, sweet and slight medical aroma.
Rosemary essential oil supports circulatory, nervous and muscular systems, and has been used for centuries to promote healthy skin and hair. It is used when treating muscle aches and cramping, rheumatism, arthritis, and poor circulation. In skin care rosemary oil is used to cure and prevent dandruff, and in skin care to treat dull skin. On mental level rosemary oil treats exhaustion and neuralgia.      
Rosemary essential oil is used by diffusing into the air, or by diluting it and applying directly to skin.

Sandalwood Essential Oil

Sandal wood essential oil’s perfume note is neither stimulating nor sedating. Aroma is rich, sweet, woody and floral and is known as an aid to meditation, spiritual growth, and an aphrodisiac.
Sandalwood essential oil acts as a tonic to the immune system, is often used in treating urinary tract problems. It balances both dry and oily skin, is useful in treating acne, and useful in soothing barber's rash. On emotional level, sandalwood oil relaxes stress, soothes irritation, and lifts depression: it is great balancing oil.
Besides mentioned, sandalwood is used to treat bronchitis, chapped skin, scars, sensitive skin, stretch marks, also laryngitis and leucorrhea.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense essential oil has fresh, woody, balsamic, slightly spicy and fruity aroma.
It has been used for centuries in meditation and spiritual work because of its connecting, grounding and balancing features.
Frankincense essential oil deals with respiratory problems, it deepens breathing, regulates mucus secretion, and bronchitis. It is also recommendable for acne, dry or oily and mature skin. It treats scars, smoothes wrinkles and stretch marks. On mental level frankincense essential oil relieves anxiety, nervous tension, depression, nightmares, fear of future and produces calm mental states.   
On emotional level cleans aura and it very powerful for ritual use.

Thyme Essential Oil

Thyme essential oil has fresh, medicinal and herbaceous aroma. It works neither stimulating nor sedating. 
Thyme oil strengthens the nerves, aids memory and concentration, and can help with the feeling of exhaustion and combats depression. It treats respiratory problems: fortifies the lungs and helps with colds, coughs, asthma, laryngitis, sinusitis, catarrh, whooping cough, sore throats and tonsillitis. It is also very helpful for cystitis and urethritis.
Thyme essential oil has warming effect, since it increases poor circulation. It helps with arthritis, rheumatism, gout, muscular aches and pains, sprains and sport injuries. Due to the circulation properties helps dealing with cellulite, anorexia, obesity and edema and in cases of scanty periods, leucorrhoea, and to speed up birth and to expel afterbirth.
In general, thyme oil can assist with nervous complaints, respiratory problems, poor circulation and problems of the digestive system and the urinary tract.
Sensitive people and people with hypertension and should avoid it.
