SPA at Home

topbeautycare.com Forum Index -> Articles archive

Long before they were discovered by Spa centers, people were using all sorts of relaxating and healing techinques at their homes, dating back to Egyptian and Greek times.

One of the most popular and beneficial treatments that can simply be applied at home are compresses. Compresses are cloths soaked in hot (herbal) infusion which, when applied to the affected area, relieves irritation and fatigue. Compresses may also be applied cold. This way they reduce inflammation.

Compresses are used for:
  • Removing cellulite
  • Detoxification
  • Skin care
  • Treating certain diseases
  • Improving circulation
  • Reducing painful muscles
  • Healing acne
  • Unbuilding fat

Basic instructions

Warm up room to temperature that enables you comfortable staying. Fragrance candles, quiet music and essential oils will contribute to the right feeling and your room will look like a true Spa centre.
Prepare 2 nylons, both large enough to cover bed and your body.
You’ll need blanket in order to keep compresses warm as long as possible.
Before applying herbal compresses, exfoliate body with circular moves using loofah glove. Hot shower is recommendable in order to open pores, so the compress would have better effect.
During treatment and afterwards drink plenty liquid, especially water or natural juices to release your body of all toxins. Spa centers use line blankets, but for home-use ordinary towels will be just fine. You’ll need 6-8 towels. Keep in mind they will not be easy to wash, especially if using kelps, seaweeds or mud.
For optimal results repeat treatment once weekly during 6 week period. Afterwards it is enough to apply treatment once a month. In order to relax and to detoxify body successfully treat yourself with warm bath few days after applying compresses.
Although most compresses use only natural ingredients, it is recommendable to take allergy test before applying any herb or essential oil directly on skin. Take a skin patch test if you have any doubts about possible skin sensitivity, irritation or allergy.
48 hours after applying compresses avoid sugar, caffeine, fried food, soft drinks and alcohol.

Types of compresses

Cook 8 cups of distillated water in a pot; remove from fire and add ingredients. Leave infusion to run cold to skin-comfortable temperature (15 minutes for approximately 92° F or 33° C). Soak towel by towel into infusion and apply compresses, starting from feet to upper part of the body. Use one towel for each leg, one for upper body, one for each arm and one for back.
Lie down and wrap yourself into nylon and cover with blankets to keep compresses warm as long as possible. Stay this way 20 minutes to one hour. Afterwards take a bath. Do not forget to drink plenty fluids during and after applying treatment.
