People that suffer from pollen sneezing anticipate every spring with fear. In developed countries number of people suffering from allergies is doubled every 10 years: even 20 to 25% of all population in developed world suffers from allergies. Reason for such allergy expansion is still not known. However, scientist think, the reason lies in modern way of life: fumes, smoking and overall environment pollution. Often emersion of allergies in industrial centers is explained by polluted particles irritate bronchies and thus ease allergic pleurisy reaction by increasing functioning of pleurisy, while on other side release absorption of allergenic materials.
FROM TINGLING TO SHOCK Allergy is actually redundant answer of organism on otherwise harmless materials, such as pollen, animal hair or some foods. Most often allergy is pollen allergy, also known as pollen sneezing, pollen fever or allergic rhinitis, which is manifested through reaction of nose and eyes on pollen, and occurs in period from spring to fall, when pollen ratio in air is higher than usual. When microscopic particles enter nose and eyes, anti-bodies are created. As a consequence body starts to isolate biologically active material histamine, which is one of materials which cause inflammation of tissue, widens blood vessels, and cause itching, twitting, runny nose, redness, twitting and runny eyes, skin reactions…
Intensity of allergic reaction depends on condition of immune system and of course intensity contact with allergen. Especially dangerous is acute reaction of respiratory and cardiovascular system. Narrowing of bronchies brings to symptoms of asthma (lack of air and aggravated breathing). If cardiovascular system is endangered, this can cause so called allergic or anaphylactic shock, which is the severest form of allergy and is a medical emergency.
ALLERGY SYMPTOMS
- Respiratory system: sneezing, runny eyes, swelling of eyelids, itchy throat
- Eyes: in contact with allergens it can cause swelling of connective tissue; consequences are red and swollen eyes, runny eyes, itching, so called allergic conjunctivitis: these symptoms most often occur simultaneously with allergic rhinitis.
- Other symptoms: tiredness, faintness, irritability, headache, temperature, loss of appetite.
USEFUL ADVICE
- In period when there is many pollen in the air, you should avoid spending time, and especially practicing sport activities on open air, because then you breathe deeper and allow bigger amount of pollen to enter respiratory system.
- While driving in car, close your windows.
- In nature concentration of pollen is highest in the morning, in the city this is the case in the evening. If you live in rural area it is best to aerate rooms between 19 and 24 o’clock, and if you live in the city, it is best to do so between 6 and 8 o’clock in the morning.
- Before going to bed, wash your hair, in order not to sleep with allergens.
- Clothes that you wear during the day leave outside the bedroom.
- Wear sun glasses to protect eyes from pollen.
ALLERGY PREVENTIONTo reduce liability to allergies, immune system should be strengthen.
1. Red cumin Oil It is rich in vitamins and minerals, and its main ingredient is linoleic acid, which is unsaturated fat acid, that is not created by organism itself, but is essential in regulation of allergic and inflaming reactions in our bodies. Preparation is applied once or twice a day during a meal and with lots of fluid.
2. ZincZinc is also a guard or human immune system. Lack of zinc can bring to different respiratory system and skin allergy reactions. Deposits of zinc are found in mastocytes- cells that play an important role in defense reactions. Lack of zinc can be especially dangerous for smokers, because in their bodies zinc is replaced by poisonous cadmium from cigarette smoke, which can bring to dangerous lung disease. Zinc preparations should be taken in low doses (20 mg).
3. CalciumCalcium is often used in therapy of allergies because it regulates delinquency of blood vessels and this way eases allergic reaction. However, one thing must not be forget: people suffering from kidney disease or hyperparathyreodism should not take preparations of calcium without doctor’s approval. Dose, higher than 1200 mg a day is not recommendable.
DISEASE DEVELOPMENTIt is not easy to predict what way allergy will develop, because this depends from case to case. Intensity of allergic reaction can fluctuate during whole life. However, it often happens that by strengthening immune system intensity of allergic reaction drops, and the other way around. In young people allergies can be caused by materials that haven’t caused an allergic reaction before. In time, symptoms become stronger, and possible is also change of allergy spot.
Allergic people are prone to some illnesses: inflammation of nasal mucous increases the risk of sinus inflammation and middle ear inflammation. More than 80% of people that suffer from rhinitis only one year, have significant changes in sinuses. Occurrence of nasal polyps is also more often.
ONE STEP TO ASTHMAIs there a connection between asthma and allergic rhinitis? It is considered that more than 40% of allergic rhinitis patients have asthma, and even 90% of people suffering from asthma have allergic rhinitis.
Asthma is characterized by cough attacks, heavy and nosy (squealing) breathing, which pass spontaneously or after applying medications. Between the attacks patients usually feel good. In phases of active inflammation contraction of muscles and increased forming of mucous in respiratory system occur, which aggravates flow of air and cause symptoms, mentioned above.
Since people suffering from asthma are extremely sensitive, attacks can be caused by non-allergic factors, like: physical strain, breathing in cold and dry air, virus infections, strong emotions, polluted air, also cigarette smoke.
DIAGNOSISMost important is to discover what you are allergic to, what is not always and easy chore.
Allergy diary Write down when you notice difficulties, how fast and under which circumstances they occur, and under which circumstances they worsen, and under which relieve.
Skin tests Skin tests show whether skin reacts to certain allergen or not. Skin tests work on principle of bringing skin into contact with allergen. After 15-20 minutes reaction on skin occurs, whether redness or swelling.
Blood testsBlood test inegrates diagnosis. They are most often done when it is not possible to do skin test due to potential strong skin reaction or when skin test is indistinct.
Provocation testsProvocation tests show in what concentration allergens bring difficulties. They can be done with inhaling allergens as well as with allergens in food.
AVOIDING ALLEREGENS
When doctor determines allergy and allergens, your first precaution is avoiding allergens as much as possible.
Allergy symptoms are more ventilated when amount of pollen is bigger, which means they are the strongest in period of blooming. Besides that, concentration is bigger in the morning, in sunny and windy days, when dry and light pollen is spread abroad by wind, and vice versa, on the beginning and end of blooming, as well as on rainy and moisture days, concentration of pollen is much lower.
Biggest problems create plants that pollinate by wind (trees, worts, and weeds), while decorative flower pollen, as well as plants that are pollinated by insects, usually do not cause problems.
The only useful advice is to avoid spending time in open air, especially practicing physical activities on open air when concentration of pollen is high. Particularly you have to avoid running and other sport activities in morning hours in rich vegetation area.
TREATMENTYou have to be aware that medications for allergies work exclusively on relieving allergy symptoms. Weal allergy reaction can be treated with over-the-counter medications, while for stronger reactions remedy must be prescribed by a doctor.
Never the less, medications bring only symptom offset- they do not cure the allergy. Problems of pollen sneezing can be treated with local appliance of certain preparations, such as cream which is in thin layer applied on nose mucus to prevent mucus contact with allergens from the air. Nasal sprays, based on sea water and with addition of salt and manganese relieve hygiene and nose cleaning, especially when allergens are particularly aggressive, and manganese is known by its defense role in organism. Spray must be used few times daily.
Antihistaminic treatment Form: Pills, nasal sprays, eye drops
Efficacy: They block receptors for histamine on the surface of a cell and prevent its functioning. They effectively relieve most of allergy symptoms, particularly if antihistaminic treatments are applied before the allergic reaction.
How do they help: They relieve symptoms of sneezing and itching in nose, throat, and eyes. They also decrease swelling of nasal mucus and stopple nose. Older antihistaminic treatments had caused sleepiness and increased appetite, while newer substances, such as active material in belodine, do not have unwanted effects.
Decongestive treatmentForm: Nasal drops, sprays
Efficacy: They work on blood vessels of nasal mucus decreasing impracticability and uncomfortable runny nose.
Whom do they help: These medications make nose passable for appliance of intranasal antihistaminic treatments and corticosteroids, which then relieve symptoms.
Notice: People, suffering from allergic sneezing very often and too often apply these medications, which can bring to destructive consequences for heath.
Corticosteroids Form: They are more often inhaled (on nose or mouth) and less often applied as pills or injections
Efficacy: Anti- inflaming treatment that relieves allergic symptoms
Whom do they help: They are prescribed when appliance of antihistaminic treatment did not totally relieve symptoms, in short, in heavier form of allergy. They can be prescribed in combination with antihistaminic treatment or automatically. Corticosteroids are very effective in treating allergic rhinitis and asthma. Because of the possible potential side effects, prescribed therapy must be followed.
HormonesForm: Nasal sprays
Efficacy: They prevent cells to relieve histamines. Besides reducing symptoms, they also work on inflammation itself preventing occurrence of respiratory problems.
Whom do they help: In some people hormonal sprays can totally prevent occurrence of reaction typical for allergic rhinitis.
- What is hypersensitivity?
Hypersensitivity is a method of customizing organism to certain allergens. Method is applied by injecting allergens once or twice weekly under the skin in bigger and bigger concentrations. If method is successfully applied, repeating contact with allergen will not cause allergy symptoms or they will be much tender then before.
This method is recommended for strong allergic difficulties that yearly last more than one month, as well as with allergens that are not easily avoided such as pollen or animal hair. In that kind of treatment, treatment must be applied before the season of allergies begins:- in late fall or during winter. Treatment must be applied and supervised by experienced doctor and must not last longer than 3 to 5 years. It is inevitable to say that due to potential side effects, after every injection patient must be under supervision of experienced doctor, for at least 30 to 45 minutes.
