Multivitamin preparations for sportsmen often contain too high doses of vitamins or even illegal substances. We witness national representatives to be caught in the act. New information Researches on vitamins give again and again new results and new information. For example, few years ago we all though that vitamin C and complex B are totally harmless and they cannot have negative effects even in mega doses. Today we know this is not truth.
When talking about uncontrolled vitamin consumption, particularly dangerous are vitamins that are soluble in fats, which are vitamins A, D, E, and K, which in overdose cases lead to blood coagulation, cause disruption in central nerve system, immunity disruption, and worsen athletic performance.
Vitamin C MistakesIt was believed that vitamin C has beneficial features for sport results, that it strengthens immunity, and prevents frequency of respiratory infections. Newest research however show vitamin C has no effects whatsoever on sport results, and that it is not advisable to consume vitamin C doses higher than 100 milligrams daily.
The newest research about synthetic vitamin C show, that artificial vitamin C has no beneficial features for health despite the marketing campaigns of vitamin C producers.
Instead of multivitamin preparations, consumption of fruit and vegetables is recommended.
Most Important is ModestyIntensive and frequent physical activity leads to oxidative stress, which causes higher level of oxidative substances in body and destructive action of free radicals on cells and tissues. Consequences of such condition are premature aging, atherosclerosis, diabetes, cancer, muscular dystrophy, Alchaimer disease, etc.
Anti-oxidants lower damage caused by free radicals, neutralize their functioning and help rebuilding damaged tissues.
Vitamin C is quality anti-oxidant, but under no circumstances it should be consumed in doses higher than 500 milligrams. However, some multivitamin preparations contain 1-2 grams and even incredible 10 grams of vitamin C. This is very harmful because in mega doses vitamin C causes numerous problems; for example, in people with stomach problems vitamin C increases excretion of stomach acid, it causes problems with ulcer, creation of kidney stones, it brings to decomposition of vitamin B12, etc.
Only natural for juniors While children are growing they have increased need for vitamins, but they are also most sensitive for overdosing.
Too much vitamins A and D slow down growth and development, and may cause liver or kidney damage.
Remember, nature always gives the best, so well balanced diet is always the best option. Even juniors, whose goal is to become top-level sportsmen, do not need artificial supplements.
Vitamins or doping? The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) officially hasn’t inherited even one multivitamin preparation. However, it has been proved that certain preparations of such type contain forbidden substances that are mixed with vitamins, but their presence is not labeled on declaration.
Two years ago Austrian government hired a team of experts to examine multivitamin and multi-minerals present on Austrian market. Their chore was to examine if mentioned preparations contain any substances that are not mentioned on label. The results were confounding! 80% of all examined samples were discovered to contain substances forbidden by WADA!!! The largest number of vitamins and minerals, produced particularly by American manufacturers (!!!), contained anabolic steroids, that are considered to be dangerous doping substances, which effects are health threatening.
Few months after publishing results, the director’s car exploded, and his assistant reported his family received threatening letters. It is obvious powerful pharmacy companies do not allow such information to be revealed to public, even when such study is performed in organized and stable country such as Austria.
