Yes, this is true, in mostly all sea food mercury is found, and not only in tuna. I think people thinking that only tuna will somehow damage their health is a product of anti-tuna-campaign Mercury could be very dangerous (if eaten in large amounts…I really don’t know how much tuna you should eat to feel consequence of mercury poisoning).
Mercury poisoning can cause different problems, depends on exposure and form of mercury- mercury can cause severe defects in infants (fetus is most susceptible) and many other problems, such as problems with vision, sensations, lack of coordination, impairment of speech, as well as hearing, walking, coordination and muscle weakness. This are consequences of methylmercury- when people eat fish or shellfish (not only tuna diet!!!) they are most common exposed to mercury- and fish contains methylmercury, which is chemical form of mercury and is more toxic than elemental mercury.
Substitute for tuna diet (and remember not only tuna contains mercury), which is rich in proteins and low in carbs, is poultry and meat. But if you eat approximately 3 cans tuna or other fish per week, your mercury levels should be normal. If you are still worried, consult your doctor!
Hope this was helpful... Good luck! |
